A sociable Andean pack animal, larger cousin of the alpaca.
Llamas are domesticated members of the Camelidae family, originally hailing from the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains in South America. These gentle animals thrive in grassy plains and mountainous regions, where they graze on a diet of grass, hay, and some grains. While llamas are not considered endangered, their wild relatives, such as the guanaco, face threats from habitat loss and hunting. One interesting fact about llamas is that they can communicate with each other through a series of different vocalisations, including humming and alarm calls. For UK families eager to meet these charming creatures, llamas can be seen at various zoos and wildlife parks, where they often participate in educational talks and interactive experiences.
