Donkeys are domesticated members of the Equidae family, closely related to horses and zebras. Originally from North Africa and the Middle East, they thrive in various environments, including deserts, grasslands, and mountainous regions. Donkeys are herbivores, primarily grazing on grasses, hay, and grains, making them well-suited for life in pastoral settings.
Although donkeys are domesticated and not considered endangered, they play a vital role in agriculture and transport in many parts of the world. An interesting fact about donkeys is that they have a unique vocalisation known as a "bray," which can be heard from miles away and is used to communicate with other donkeys.
UK families can see these charming animals at many zoos and wildlife parks, where they often participate in educational programmes highlighting their importance in human history and agriculture.
